healthy hair routine.
My hair care routine seems to stay the same…
I know, I know, the hair stylist has the SAME old boring hair care routine? As the months go by, I learn about new products, tips & tricks to keep my hair healthy & shiny. The products may change, but the routine stays strong! Go back to the BEAUTY page for my current hair products.
shampoo & scalp scrubs.
I tend to switch up my shower routine depending on the day, due to factors such as: how dry/itchy my scalp is & how much product residue I have. I shampoo my hair twice in the shower, once with clarifying shampoo & once with either a hydrating or volumizing shampoo. If my hair feels a little more dry, I’ll obviously use a hydrating shampoo over the volumizing. I use a clarifying shampoo no matter what because it rids product residue from the hair. Kind of like a reset button.
conditioner.
Again, I tend to switch up my routine depending on the day. But since I tend to have a very dry scalp, I use a hydrating conditioner or a hair treatment. I make sure all my products are colour safe (as most salon quality products are), because if you aren’t using either a shampoo or conditioner that protects your colour, then you’re basically washing your money down the drain.
Hydrating conditioners are different than hair masks & treatments because conditioners help close the hair cuticle & improve the texture of the hair, while masks & treatments improve hair quality, contain more nourishing & repairing ingredients while penetrating the hair where it’s damaged. Here a couple different ways I apply conditioner, masks & treatments.
ONE: I apply an oil treatment from the mid to ends of my hair, throw it in a bun & head to the gym or to run some errands. Once I’m in the shower I shampoo the treatment out & comb through my conditioner to close the cuticle.
TWO: I shampoo my hair in the shower & switch out my conditioner by combing a hair mask through & rinse as usual. The mask will close the hair cuticle, so there’s no need to double condition.
THREE: Shampoo & apply a hydrating conditioner as usual if my hair is feeling ‘normal’. Make sure you comb your hair with the conditioner in with a Wet Brush or a wide tooth comb.
out of the water.
Once I get out of the shower, I towel dry my hair carefully & apply a detangler & a leave in cream generously, starting from mid to ends. I then gently comb all the knots out from the top of my beaded extensions with a wide tooth comb. Lastly, I scrunch in mousse to help manipulate my hair into textured beach waves & let my hair air dry naturally.
(Applying a leave in treatment/styling cream before your hair is dry should be a must for everyone. It smooths & tames fly aways, adds moisture & shine while protecting your hair from harmful heat damage.)
Styling.
My go-to style, like I said before, is beachy waves (click here to see how I style my hair). My heat protectant is in the detangler & leave in cream, so I’m free to start styling. I comb out my hair once more so it’s all smooth & start applying heat. Once I’m finished, I finish with a texture spray.
TIPS.
I bring a hair oil & a comb with me to smooth out any tangles throughout the day.
